The Youth Uprising: Inside the Cockroach Janta Party & Jantar Mantar Protests

What began as an online satirical reaction to controversial remarks in May 2026 has transformed into one of India’s largest youth-led protest movements in recent history. Spearheaded by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), thousands of students, young professionals, and civil society members gathered at New Delhi’s historic Jantar Mantar to demand systemic education reforms and accountability.

Core Demands of the Movement

The demonstrations follow widespread outrage surrounding systemic examination paper leaks and revaluation irregularities affecting high-stakes entrance exams like NEET-UG 2026 and CBSE board assessments:

  • Ministerial Accountability: The immediate resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over recurring exam paper leaks and administrative lapses.
  • Structural Exam Reforms: Total overhaul of public examination bodies and transparent, tamper-proof testing mechanisms.
  • Compensation & Support: Financial assistance and legal support for families of deceased NEET aspirants and injured student protesters.
  • Protection of Peaceful Assembly: Safeguarding civil liberties and preventing arbitrary police crackdowns on student demonstrators.

The 'Chalo Sansad' March & Escalation

On July 20, 2026—coinciding with the opening day of Parliament’s Monsoon Session—the CJP launched its 'Chalo Sansad' (March to Parliament) rally. Despite heavy security arrangements, barricades, and internet suspensions across central New Delhi, over 10,000 protesters converged near Jantar Mantar and attempted to march toward Parliament House.

"They are calling this protest illegal, but we are standing here to fight for our education system, for the rights of young people, and for our democracy."

Clashes erupted when security forces deployed tear gas and baton charges (lathi charges) to disperse the crowd attempting to breach security perimeters. Dozens of student protesters and police personnel sustained injuries during the confrontation.

Current Situation & Opposition Stand

Despite police attempts to clear the protest site and dismantle temporary structures, CJP activists led by founder Abhijeet Dipke reclaimed Jantar Mantar on July 21 to continue their sit-in. Major opposition parties, including the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party, have raised the issue inside Parliament and launched parallel demonstrations demanding government dialogue with the student leadership.
